Nader Runs For President…Again!

Ralph Nader announced his candidacy for president yesterday.  I’ll admit to being angry and upset upon first hearing this news, fearing another vote-splitting a la 2000 & ’04.  However, the strength of the 2008 Democratic candidates gives me confidence that Nader will have little to no dilatory effect on the Democrats’ efforts to win the presidency.  It’s pretty clear that both Obama and Clinton have generated much more excitement and votes than either John Kerry or Al Gore did.  Back in the days when Democrat-leaning independents would often think, “the Democratic nominee is better than Bush, but I’m not sure he really stands for anything, maybe he’s not such a great candidate,” Nader’s announcement would pose a problem.  This year, we’ll hardly feel the breeze of his speeches…I hope.

Worthy of note: This is Nader’s fourth official run for presidency, 5th if you count his write-in campaign in 1992.  He stubbornness exceeds that of other famous also-rans, such as William Jennings Bryan (3 presidential losses for the Dems) and Al Sharpton (1 failed attempt as Democratic nominee for president, 3 failed attempts at becoming US Senator of New York, and 1 failed attempt to become mayor of New York City.)  Al Sharpton is certainly giving Nader a run for his money though.

  1. WJB is my great great grandfather! I have his beaver fur top hat in my parent’s basement. He is (I believe) the only other presidential candidate, along with Al Gore, to get the majority of the popular vote yet still lose the election.

What do you think Nader is trying to accomplish by running again? I have no serious fears of him slurping away Dem votes like before, but I’m very curious about what he thinks there is to gain. His whole candidacy comes across to me as spiteful.

  2. That’s incredibly awesome that you’re a direct descendant of WJB. That means you have rhetorical genius in your blood.

I think Nader believes he’s making a statement about the two-party system and what’s wrong with it. But he’s such old news, I don’t think anyone would listen. Perhaps we’d all understand him a bit more if we watched the documentary, RALPH NADER: AN UNREASONABLE MAN.

  3. Just as in 2000… and we saw who we got then!!!

A vote for Nader was a vote for Bush.

    And now:
A vote for Nader is a vote for McCain!

If ya’ like going to war in the wrong country for no apparent reason vote McCain.

Uhhh…lemme see… terrorists from Saudi Arabia flew planes into buildings on the direction of another Saudi in Afghanistan…. soooo….OBVIOUSLY… we should invade Iraq.

Yep! Lemme have some more of that logic…. Maybe Bush can run as Vice-President…. Is that allowed? Because he and his staff are real geniuses.

Remember folks, the ONLY reason Bush got the White House was because of Nader. Thus Nader can be blamed for: The Iraq War, The economy, The price of oil, and possibly even 9-11.(one can only guess on that last one) McCain is just as nutty as Bush but smarter which makes him more dangerous.
